Small Buildings

As long as people are constrained by space, budget or planning restrictions there will be small buildings. Understanding that there was no need to reinvent the wheel we decided to design a series of small buildings that could fit a number of different uses. This would mean that although there maybe some design tweaks depending on the client and the use, most of the work would already be done and this would help save time and money. We decided that whether people wanted a tiny one person office in the garden or a backwoods cabin to stay in with their family they would want it to have the same attention to detail, craftsmanship and use of quality materials that our conventional timber frame buildings have. We wanted them to be compact but naturally light and warm spaces that could be used all year round in whatever weather. They would also be designed to be built entirely or in sections in our workshop, which means the time on site and the disturbance of the build to the client is minimal. In fact the smallest buildings should be able to be craned off a lorry and straight into position. We have also made sure that some of them have been designed to not require planning permission. Obviously it is worth checking the regulations in your local area.

We sell these as timber frames on their own for the self builder, as a weatherproof shell or as fully fitted finished buildings with wood burners, beds, plumbing or kitchens…. whatever the heart desires. If you are off-grid we can also arrange to have a photovoltaic system installed.

"Every morning I have a wonderful time of meditation and prayer in `your` garden room! It`s a joy to be part of the space and has a great natural feel to it. It is also excellently crafted and superbly warm. The room is filled with light, and it`s a special place to retreat to"

− Rev. David Ursell, Cheriton Bishop, Devon

"Tom and his team built us a stunning conservatory using oak from our own tree. It is beautiful and exactly what we wanted. Tom listened to our plans, and adapted our architect’s drawings to make them workable, and arrived with all the oak cut and ready to assemble on site.

If we ever build a house...it will be Tom we will call"

− Trish Padwicke, Briantspuddle, Dorset

"Tom MacCurrach’s design and build of our beautiful oak gazebo is now licensed for civil ceremonies and has already paid for itself in the first year. If you want a highly professional, personal service working with a craftsman, then look no further."
